Agenda

GOAL: Participants will learn the importance of cemetery preservation, understand deterioration mechanisms, implement basic resetting techniques and known proper cleaning techniques 9:00am: Meet at The Armory Arts & Music Center 1624 London Road Duluth, MN 9:00am – 11:00am “Cemetery Preservation Basics” presentation

  • “Why cemetery preservation?”
  • Cemetery preservation ethics and safety
  • Stone types, gravestone shapes/meanings
  • Cemetery preservation planning
    • Prioritizing which gravestones to clean and reset
    • Cemetery landscaping and grounds clean up
  • Documenting preservation work (cleaning, resetting, repair)
  • Gravestone cleaning visual demonstration (do’s and don’ts)
  • Gravestone resetting visual demonstration

11am-12pm Lunch provided Noon: Meet at Scandia Cemetery (Park in Glensheen Mansion parking lot at 3300 London Road Duluth, MN) Noon – 3:00pm: Gravestone Cleaning and Gravestone Resetting Demonstration in the Field. Trainer will first demonstrate to the group and then the workshop participants will do both cleaning and resetting.
